The 1991–92 season was bittersweet for Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson. United won the League Cup (their first in history), defeating Nottingham Forest 1–0 with a Brian McClair goal. They also lifted the UEFA Super Cup, beating Red Star Belgrade 1–0. In the European Cup Winners’ Cup, they reached the second round before elimination by Atlético Madrid. However, the league campaign ended in disappointment—United led much of the season but faltered late, allowing Leeds United to win the First Division title.
